AT&T’s news-focused streaming service CNN Plus debuted Tuesday, offering a mix of interactive news and feature programming for about $6 a month.
The streaming service immediately became available to users of Apple and Android phones and tablets, as well as streaming devices running the Apple TV OS and Amazon Fire TV OS.
The app isn't available for users of Roku devices or Android TV devices, though for various reasons. A spokesperson for CNN confirmed to Broadcasting & Cable's trade publication that a carriage deal with Roku is still being worked out. A person familiar with the matter told The Desk that a development glitch involving the CNN Plus app for Android TV forced the company to drop support for those devices at the service's launch date.
Earlier this year a deal was struck between WarnerMedia, a subsidiary of AT&T, which is CNN's parent company, to bring CNN Plus to users of Comcast's X1 smart TV platform. But users of Comcast's X1 and Flex set-top boxes will also be waiting a bit for CNN Plus to arrive.
CNN Plus is also not available on Sony's PlayStation or Microsoft's Xbox consoles, and it is unclear whether versions of the app are being developed for native smart TV operating systems such as LG's webOS and Samsung's Tizen.
Earlier this month, a CNN executive told financial news outlet Bloomberg that widespread distribution across multiple platforms is a major goal of CNN Plus.
The app launched Tuesday at a price of $6 per month, though early customers can sign up for early bird specials offered by the service for as little as $3 per month.
Last week, CNN unveiled its programming line-up for CNN Plus, which includes shows hosted by journalists Kate Bolduan, Jake Tapper, Kasie Hunt and Anderson Cooper.
The CNN Plus app will feature shows and documentaries that are different from those broadcast on traditional cable networks. To use CNN Plus, users need to download the CNN app for their supported device. CNN's domestic and international news feeds will remain available to cable and satellite subscribers within the CNN app.
